Why this book?
Ian M. Banks' Culture universe is one of the most rich, engaging, and well thought out sci-fi settings and Banks' prose is such a marvelous way to experience it.
Player of Games stands out for me as one of the most poignant explorations of "What would we do if everything was done for us?". Once we achieve the Utopia, what's left? Can there be meaning without struggle?
The Culture series is also somewhat unique in that every entry is a fantastic stand-alone novel, but they also all build atop one another.
